EVENTS

NOVEMBER - Poets & Punk Rock

The last two adult events of a busy fall book season will happen this week. On Wednesday, Nov 13 we will have our last Way Out East Book Series of the year at Jordan’s Homeside Pub (1521 Main Street East.) The Way Out Series has been our attempt to bring writers out to a neighbourhood venue where people can be introduced to new Canadian writing, and have a chance to hang-out with the authors in a relaxed setting. Jordan’s Pub is true neighbourhood hangout place with decent beer and an all plant based menu.

Wednesday, November 13 7-9

Wednesday’s event will feature two Hamilton Poets - Darrell Epp and Ben Robinson.

Darrell Epp will read from his new collection Alien Phonics Primer. Alien Phonics Primer is Epp’s take on both the here and now of Hamilton, and what that here and now means in terms philosophical and artistic communication.

Ben Robinson will present work from his new book As Is - a collection that is focused on Hamilton and concerns the poets attempt to understand what It means to part of a colonial history and how people from a settler background connect to this place.

Jordan’s Homeside Pub , 1521 Main Street East

Friday, November 13 7-9

Our last event will be the Hamilton launch for Chris MacDonald’s new non-fiction book Day and Days. MacDonald’s name might be familiar from his first book The Things I Came Here With – a memoir about MacDonald’s hard scabble childhood and how art – tattooing, in particular, changed his life. The new book is part travelogue, part memoir, and a music book. In Days and Days, the writer chronicles a back-packing trip he and friend make to the UK in search of Sunderland’s punk heros Leatherface. Although, technically a memoir/music book Days and Days, with Macdonald’s sparse and honest approach to writing about his life make this book “about” so much more. It is a book about being young, taking chances, dedication, and the things that connect people across geography. And, of course, it is about – Punk Rock.

This book is a must have for anybody with even a passing interest in the band Leatherface.Day

Also, we will have a reading by Kyle Hollingdrake from a newly released tattooing zine, Needles and Pens.

Downstairs at Doors Pub. 56 Hess Street South 7-9 pm.

C&C HOLIDAY DO!

It’s a Holiday Do not a Holiday Don’t!

Since you follow this newsletter, you are the select few to be invited to our Holiday Do happening at The City & The City Books (181 Ottawa St N) Friday, Dec 6 from 7-9. Everything will be 10% off, so start, or finish, or get the upper hand on your holiday shopping! Maybe buy yourself a present! There will also be some snacks, some freebies, and lots of fun. We just want to show that we really appreciate the fact that you come to our store, you buy the books, and you talk to us. You are the best!

NON-FICTION FOR TRYING TIMES

As we are still reeling from the fascist overtake in the States and just seeing footage of the wannabe thugs outside Jackson Square holding Mass Deportation Now sign, makes me think of how hard we will have to work (and we will!) to ensure that this does not happen here in Canada. Here are some books that might provide some guidance, reassurance, and fiery inspiration!

Our safety net is fraying. Loreto outlines the choices we need to make to fix all that is crumbling around us as well as the possible paths forward.

This work from one of the country’s most important writers is about the urgent need to untangle ourselves from the destructive myths that shape our world—and our own souls—and embrace the liberating power of even the most difficult truths.

Autocracy Inc is alarming account of how autocracies work together to undermine the democratic world, and how we should organize to defeat them.

An exploration of freedom—what it is, how it’s been misunderstood, and why it’s our only chance for survival.

In these newly collected essays, interviews, and speeches, world-renowned activist and scholar Angela Y. Davis illuminates the connections between struggles against state violence and oppression throughout history and around the world.

When the Pine Needles Fall offers insight into Indigenous language, history, and philosophy, reflections on our relationship with the land, and calls to action against both colonialism and capitalism as we face the climate crisis.

Democracy is fragile. How to Stand Up to a Dictator is an urgent cry for Western readers to recognize and understand the dangers to our freedoms before it is too late. It is a book for anyone who might take democracy for granted, written by someone who never would.

It is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism. Capitalist Realism is a sharp analysis of the post-ideological malaise that suggests that the economics and politics of free market neo-liberalism are givens rather than constructions.

HELPFUL HOLIDAY HINTS

The holiday season is upon us! Here is some handy dandy info about shopping at The City & The City Books including special orders, hours, and more!

If you want to special order a book, please get your order to us on or before Dec 9th. Our distributors have different shipping schedules so some books take longer to get here than others. There will be some books we can get after that day but better safe than sorry!

In regards to special orders, in the next week or so we will have the option on our website to special order books that we do not have in stock. EXCITING! When that does happen, we will let you know via social media.

We will be staying open until 7 pm on Thursday Dec 12 & 19th and Friday Dec 13 & 20 for some late night shopping.

In a pickle about what book to buy a loved one, co-worker, secret Santa? Ask us, we will have some ideas!

We try to remind people when buying gifts but sometimes forget. We do offer gift receipts. So if in doubt about a book, get a gift receipt.
