TOP PICKS OF OUR SUMMER

The Utopian Generation - Pepetela (Biblioasis) A seminal novel of African decolonization available for the first time in English translation by Pepetela a former guerilla fighter and Angolan minister.

The Siege of Burning Grass - Premee Mohamed (Solaris) A dystopian novel with a stunning meditation on war, nationalism, violence and courage by a rising star of the genre.

The Heart in Winter - Kevin Barry (Knopf Canada) A savagely funny and achingly romantic tale of young lovers on the lam in 1890s Montana, from award-winning writer Kevin Barry.

State of Paradise - Laura van den Berg (Farrar, Straus and Giroux) A wonderfully strange story involving a pandemic, a virtual reality device, ominous cats, torrential rains, and family dynamics set in Florida. Plus there may be cult.

Time of the Flies - Claudia Pineiro (Charco Press) A woman, fresh out of prison for killing her husbands mistress and obsessed with flies, opens a pest control and detective agency gets a new client who is more interested in what she did in her past than about killing bugs.
